Speech & Audiology Assessments
Understanding your child’s communication needs with warmth and care
Speech, Language and Literacy Assessment
Our speech, language and literacy assessments are tailored to your child’s age and communication needs, evaluating a wide range of skills including speech, language, literacy, social communication, and cognitive-communication abilities. They may involve formal testing, observations, interviews, language sampling, questionnaires, and input from teachers or other health professionals. These assessments can also help identify whether a child may have Dyslexia or Dysgraphia.
Types of Assessment:
- Speech Production Assessment: Focuses on articulation and speech production
- Preschool Speech and Language Assessment: Evaluates speech production, receptive and expressive language, and phonological/sound awareness
- Primary and High School Speech, Language and Literacy Assessment: Comprehensive evaluation of speech production, expressive and receptive language, phonological and auditory skills, auditory memory, reading, and written language. Can help determine if a child may have Dyslexia or Dysgraphia. Please note: A formal Dyslexia diagnosis requires at least 6 months of intensive therapy if difficulties persist.
All assessments include a comprehensive formal report, while the speech and language assessment also provides a separate feedback session. This ensures a clear foundation for therapy planning and support, giving a thorough understanding of your child’s communication, literacy, and social skills.
Audiology Assessment
Our audiology assessments are conducted by our experienced paediatric audiologist, who specialises in Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). These assessments evaluate your child’s hearing and auditory processing abilities, which can affect speech, language, literacy, and learning.
* We do not conduct hearing tests for children under 3 years old.
Hearing Screen and Hearing Assessment
- Hearing Screen: A quick check of your child’s hearing and ear health across key frequencies, suitable for all children 3 years and older.
- Hearing Assessment: A more detailed evaluation, including pure tone and speech audiometry, designed to identify any hearing difficulties that may impact speech, language, or learning.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) Assessment
A full APD assessment can be completed from 5 years of age depending on your child’s receptive language skills and is usually conducted in two parts. This assessment may also highlight attention challenges that may relate to Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
The first part is the audiological assessment, which determines whether an APD is present and identifies the types of difficulties. It includes a hearing assessment, auditory processing screening (auditory comprehension, decoding, temporal processing), auditory memory, phonological processing, and attention where indicated, with further diagnostic testing if required. If an APD is identified, an auditory processing speech and language assessment is recommended to evaluate how these auditory processing challenges impact functional communication, reading, spelling, and written language, including understanding complex instructions, expressive language and phonic skills.
All assessments include a formal report while an APD assessment will include a feedback session and a full comprehensive formal report, providing a clear foundation for therapy planning and support while giving a thorough understanding of your child’s hearing, auditory processing and how it affects their communication, literacy, and social skills.
